My Hungry Tag-Along

This late in the commercial bay scallop season, the seagulls are desperate and hungry. They will land on my boat and wait for me to hand them a free meal. And if you turn your back on them they will swoop down and steal a scallop right out of your wire basket on the culling board. The other morning while scalloping I had a hungry tag-along. He begged me for food. I hand fed him some scallops. A good way to pass the time during a long tow.

Quiet

It's been very very slow down around the waterfront lately. And this winter continues to be the hottest winter in recorded history. Most days it's in the 50's and 60's. We had a few days where it was in the 40's and one day when it was in the 20's. The old timers keep telling me that we are going to pay for this warm weather soon. Well, it's getting too late in the winter. The days are getting longer. Spring is right around the corner. I noticed the grass is still green! In January! I have lived here on Nantucket for over 46 years and I have never experienced a winter this warm in my lifetime.

I haven't taken any pictures down at the waterfront for a while. But I have 9 of my trail cams out around the island taking pictures 24/7 for me. It's a hobby of mine in which I find fascinating. The variety of critters out there is amazing. Here is a nice buck I got on one of my cams the other night-

Inspiration

During the recent blow, several draggers and one sea scalloper came in and tied up at the end of Straight Wharf. The sea scalloper was the Inspiration. I have never seen her here before. She's a big steel highline boat. These guys don't mess around. Everything is shipshape and in it's place. Looks like she tows two 16' wide dredges. I also noted that she has a bulbous bow. Look at where her winches are. Up high above the deck. And the captain has his own house in which he can control the winches while setting out and hauling back the dredges. All her windows are tinted.

My Morning Commute

I grabbed a short video using my iPhone of part of my morning commute to the scallop grounds today. Most days I am the first to leave the dock and head out. A lot of Nantucket is still asleep when I'm headed out and never get to see the sunrise that I see every day.

Here's a shot I took of the sunrise on Tuesday, December 6. Sorry about the poor quality. It was taken with my iPhone. Hopefully you'll "get the picture."

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

I set up one of my trail cameras in a new (to me) area of the island and was rewarded with a nice 10-point buck. This is the biggest buck I have recorded on any of my trail cams. I'm hoping he survives shotgun season as I want to look for his sheds later in the winter.

Freddy Holdgate

I caught up with Freddy Holdgate while I was out scalloping today. Freddy and I were in the same grade in high school. We talked a bit about scalloping and how the season was progressing. He was on a good tow so I motored off and left him to it. I don't like to come down on guys and fish in their spots. A lot of guys in the fleet think nothing of doing that. It's not my style. Anyway, Freddy fishes out of an old Pogo boat. They were pretty popular here years ago and there were several around. My brother Richard fished out of a Pogo for years. They are good boats but they have round bottoms making them roll terribly. Here are a few shots I grabbed of Freddy today out scalloping-

High And Dry

A New Bedford based sea scalloper got into an awful mess last night attempting to dock at the Town Pier. She ended up running aground to the south of the pier. Unable to get herself free, she has to lay there and wait for a tug to arrive from America to pull her off. An expensive mistake for the captain of the scalloper for sure! Here are a few shots I took this morning of her hard aground-

Recently, I set up one of my trail cameras on a travel corridor between a bedding area and a food source. A lot of deer use this corridor on a nightly basis. I have always had very good luck setting up a cam in this particular spot. I caught these two young bucks locking antlers one night-

Commercial Scallop Season 2011. Week 2

We are well into the second week of the commercial bay scallop season. There still seems to be a fair amount of scallops around but the fleet is starting to jump around. Hopefully we will get another couple of weeks out of it. The price per pound paid to the scallopers was $11 per pound on opening day. Now it is $9 per pound. Still a good days pay for an hour or two of work each morning. Here are a few scenes I grabbed while I was out scalloping-

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

I set up one of my trail cams on video mode recently. This buck walked by the cam and at the last min, noticed it. He stopped short and sniffed it knocking it with his antler in the process. Never a dull moment out there! Take notice of how he is limping and the protrusion on his right side. Most likely he was in a fight with another buck as the rut is in full swing now.

I set up the camera last week in an area that holds a good variety of deer. I now have 8 trail cams strategically placed around the island. Commercial Scallop Season 2011. Day 2.

The commercial bay scallop season is progressing nicely. There is still a fair amount of scallops to be had but no eelgrass. We'll see how long the season lasts without any grass. In any event, I took some time out while I was fishing early this morning to grab a few shots.

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

I left the cam at the same spot where I got pictures of the big 8. Another 8 point buck came later in the week. His rack is narrower than the first 8 and his brows are a little bigger, especially his right one. Look at the neck on this old bruiser!

First Day Of Commercial Bay Scalloping 2011

The first day of the 2011 commercial bay scallop season went well. Much better than I expected. I got my 5 bushel limit in three tows. Not bad.

A few things I noticed while I was fishing this morning-

1) There is absolutely no eelgrass out there. This is not good. The season won't last long when there is no grass. The fishing is too easy without the heavy grass to deal with.

2) Good news is that there is a fair amount of seed in a lot of areas. Even if half of the seed lives, next season looks good.

3) Only a few areas of the harbor have scallops. The fleet will clean out these areas in a very short time.

I'll try to grab a few pictures tomorrow morning when I'm out there on the water. Stay tuned.

Dardanella

I was lurking around the waterfront late this afternoon and spotted a vessel at the end of Straight Wharf. I grabbed my camera and went over to have a look see. Her name was Dardanella and she is home ported in Georgetown. I have never seen her here before. A few min after I arrived, it was announced by a member of her crew that she was leaving. I was delegated the task of tossing her lines before she left. A role in which I gladly performed. I tossed her lines back to her from the dock and watched her depart the Boat Basin. A beautiful ship!

Note here the captain's heavy use of her bow thrusters. I consider this cheating. That boat has twin screws. She should be able to turn around within her own length. The captains of the M/V Nobska are rolling in their graves looking at this.

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

I set up one of my trail cameras at a new area of the island recently. I was rewarded with a nice buck. He comes every night at about the same time. He's completely nocturnal. Smart old buck. He has a nice rack. Very wide. I just wish his brows were taller. I have three of my trail cams in this area of the island. I will be using them to document the movement of this big old buck. I'm hoping to find his sheds later on in the winter when I start my shed hunting. I'm really want his matched set!

Diving For Bay Scallops

My buddy Tim Mooney is a diver. He has been diving for bay scallops for a long time. He recently got an underwater camera and filmed while he was diving for scallops. Here are a couple of videos Tim shot.

I set up one of my trail cams recently in the moors and had it record video this time. I captured two young bucks sparring. They are not fighting, just playing. The real fighting is during the rut which begins soon.

Family Scallop Season A Bust

My waterfront informants have reported to me that the first day of family scalloping season did not go well at all. The rumor is that there are no scallops to be found. One scalloper went to Moneymoy and it took him two hours to get two scallops. This is no surprise to me as there was no seed last year. I was told that there is a lot of seed around which is very good news for next season. If it lives. Hopefuly these preliminary rumors are false and I will update later with better news but for now, it doesn't look good.

I set up one of my trail cams in the middle moors and had some very good luck. This nice little 6-point came by the cam one night. Note the lack of brow tines on the animal.

Autumn At The Waterfront

We finally have our island back. It was a particularly tough summer for the locals. The rudeness displayed by most of the visitors around the island was out of control. It was the worst I have ever seen in the 46 years I have lived on Nantucket. I have spoken to several other people and they all agreed with me.

In any event, most everyone is gone and the island is breathing a huge sigh of relief. I ventured down to the docks recently and was surprised how quiet it was there.

I named him "Big Seven". I have been following him and photographing him with my trail cams all summer. Look at his neck. And it's not even the rut yet! I'm hoping to get a shot of him coming out of velvet but he is very elusive. Smart old buck for sure.

Nantucket Lightship

The Nantucket Lightship made a visit here recently. I spotted her yesterday at anchor in the chord of the bay. She made her way into the harbor and is now up near First Point on her anchor. I took my boat out today to have a look at her. She looks great!

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

I've been following a bachelor group of bucks all summer long. I observe them every evening. There are three of them. I'm almost positive there is a set of twins in the group. They are about the same size and they never leave each other's side. They are always together. Recently I set up one of my trail cams at their location. One of the twins was very curious and checked out my cam. Deer are very curious creatures and investigate anything new in their environment.

Interesting Boats In The Anchorage And Mooring Field

Every summer I make it a point to cruise though the general anchorage and mooring field a few times with my boat. If you are a fan of boats like me, there is always something new and interesting to see there. I visited the anchorage and mooring field today and took note of a few old girls there.

Not sure what this vessel is. I'm thinking she may be some sort of swordfish boat??

Not sure what she is but she looks pretty salty.

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

Last winter I spent four days cutting a path through the thick brush deep in the eastern part of the island. It's a third of a mile long. At the end of the path, I set up one of my trail cams to document the deer in the area. I have had some really good results at that location. It's very private. The deer are not bothered or pressured in any way. I placed my new Bushnell trail cam in there all last week set to video. I was pleased to get this nice buck on video when I went in and checked the cam. I will be documenting him further with my cams. I'm interested to see what he looks like when he comes out of velvet. I think he has some potential.

Random Shots From Moneymoy

This time of the year I spend a lot of time at Moneymoy. It's a great location to keep an eye on the waterfront and catch the last light of the day. It's also a great place to grab a few shots of the sunset.
I was at Moneymoy this evening. It felt like fall. Summer is nearly over. Another 5 weeks and we will have our island back. I'm looking forward to it.

Not sure if this is legal. It's a fence a homeowner built to keep us unwashed off "his" beach at Moneymoy.
Dune restoration???? The closest dune is 5 miles from this location. Just another attempt to keep us unwashed away from the beach at Moneymoy. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

BUCK OF THE WEEK:

I set up one of my trail cams in a different area of the island than I usually set my cams up in. A place entirely new to me. The second night my cam was there I got a big buck on film. He looks to be an 8-point, possibly a seven. It's hard to tell because his right side is starting to palmate. I believe I can see an 8th point forming. This is a nice buck by Nantucket standards. Note the curved brow tines. I will be documenting this big guy with my trail cams. It will be interesting to see him when he comes out of velvet. He still has about a month and a half of antler growth at an inch of growth per day.

Twilight At The Waterfront

If you can deal with the crowds this time of the year, twilight is a great time to visit the waterfront. I have my secret spots I go to every evening alone to enjoy the last light of the day. A visit to the Boat Basin is a must. There's always a great variety of mega yachts there to view. All of them are rather ugly to me and I hardly ever give them a second look. Give me an old wooden Harvey Gamage eastern-rigged dragger or scalloper any day and I could stare at her for hours!

I ventured down to the waterfront recently at twilight and captured a few scenes-
The M/V Great Point steaming recklessly through the no wake zone. Not sure why Hy-Line is allowed to do that on a daily basis. Note her bow and stern wake. I never understood why this boat is exempt from following the no wake zone rule.

Buck Of The Week:

I was able to get one buck on one of my trail cams last week but he was too far away for me to enter it here as the buck of the week. I'm hoping to get a closer shot of him in the coming weeks. So for this week, I decided to post pictures of some of the fawns I have captured on my trail cams recently.

I caught these twin fawns on my new Bushnell trail cam. I always like to get fawns, especially twins, on my trail cams. I have yet to get triplets. In this video, the twins are messing around and then realize mom is gone so they take off after her. After they leave, there is nothing else on the video.

It finally arrived. Summer. After the worst June in recorded history, summer has arrived and it looks as though it will be here to stay for another 8 weeks. Each day now is shorter by one min. I love this time of the year but am also looking forward to winter when we can have our island back. There are only so many people and cars the island can handle before it becomes unbearable to live here. It seems particularly worse this year.

BUCK OF THE WEEK-

I recently got a new trail cam. It incorporates the latest technology where there is a very low glow infrared flash which will not scare away the deer when their picture or video is taken at night. I had some interesting results with the new cam as soon as I put it out. This buck was very curious-

First Day Of Summer

I think the weather has finally broke. I'm not getting my hopes up just yet as it is still Junuary here. Today was the longest day of the year. Soon the days will be getting shorter by a minute each day. I'm already looking forward to fall and the slower pace of the island.

This little guy is a regular visitor to my cams. He's in velvet now. I'm documenting his antler growth this summer by using several trail cams strategically placed in his home range. It's interesting to see where he travels around the island on a daily basis. So far his antlers are growing about an inch per day.

Coatue

One of my favorite parts of the island is Coatue. This time of the year, I spend as much time over there as I possibly can. I have hiked and explored just about every square inch of it. It's a great place to escape the hoards of people which are here during the summer. Hardly anyone goes there which is fine by me!

Summer??

Looks as though summer has been delayed or even cancelled this year. This past weekend felt like mid January rather than mid June. Cold and windy. We were spoiled last summer. It was nice every single day but 4 days from April first right through Labor Day. We probably will never see another summer like that ever again.

In any event, I bundled up and ventured down to the waterfront recently and grabbed a few shots.

POSTSCRIPT: As of this writing, the deep holes on the dock at the public boat ramp at Madaket (Walter Barrett's Pier) still have not been filled in. Be very careful when you are launching and retrieving your boat there that you do not fall into these holes and break your leg or ankle.

UPDATE 6/11: JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM SOMEONE LAUNCHING A BOAT AT BARRETT'S PIER IN MADAKET. HE TOLD ME HE FELL INTO ONE OF THE HOLES ON THE DOCK AND ALMOST BROKE HIS ANKLE. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THE TOWN IS NOT GOING TO FILL IN THESE HAZARDS. I THINK IT'S TIME FOR THE BOATING PUBLIC TO DO THE REPAIR THEMSELVES BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT.

Accident Waiting to Happen At The Madaket Pier/No Buoys In Madaket Harbor/Sewer Disks Littering All Our Beaches

There is an extremely serious issue at the boat ramp in Madaket. Several holes have formed over the past few weeks in the asphalt along the front edge of the dock. These holes are approximately two feet deep. If you are not careful, you will fall into these deep holes and break your ankle or leg. Someone was nice enough to put a small piece of plywood over one of the holes. I am not sure why the Town will not fill in the holes. It's a serious accident waiting to happen.

And another thing, there are no aids to navigation in Madaket harbor, Eel Point or on the way to Tuckernuck. I am not sure why the Town has not put the buoys in yet. This past weekend was Memorial Day Weekend. Several people who own houses on Tuckernuck went over there on the weekend to open their houses for the summer season only to learn that there were no buoys marking the channels and sandbars. It was very foggy every day out there. It would have been nice to have all the buoys set before the weekend.

One more thing, I spent the long Memorial Day Weekend on Tuckernuck Island as far away as the Figawi mess as I could. While walking the beaches there, I noticed those sewer disks from the plant in New Hampshire littering the beaches as far as the eye could see. They were everywhere especially on the south shore beaches of Tuckernuck. This is a disgrace. The owners of the sewer plant in New Hampshire where the sewer disks originated have no plans of coming to Nantucket to clean up their mess.

I set up one of my trail cams deep in the eastern part of the island recently. The bucks are just starting to come into velvet. Their antlers are growing rapidly. I'm documenting this big guy's antler development over the summer with my cam. He looks to be a bruiser.

And finally, check out this video of an angry doe kicking another doe. I set up one of my cams over a pile of fresh cut macintosh apples last night. I get a lot of deer kicking and fighting on my cams. Never a dull moment out in nature.

Well, I didn't think it would ever happen but it did. The weather finally broke today after over two weeks of cold, rain, fog, drizzle and ever-living gales. I was starting to lose all hope. I wonder if the pattern of the past two weeks will change. I was just starting to get used to the dreary days. I went down to the waterfront this evening to have a look. It was beautiful. Flat calm and warm. Things are starting to get busy. Boats are on their moorings and folks are milling around. It felt like summer. Here are some scenes from tonite-
While walking along the beach at Hulbert Ave this evening, I saw hundreds and hundreds of these sewer disks washed up from a sewer plant in New Hampshire. The disks in the above picture were collected on only twenty feet of beach. What a mess. I wonder if the owners of the plant are going to come here and clean up their mess. I highly doubt it.

On a side note, I'm starting to get bucks in velvet on my trail cams. I recently set up a cam deep in the eastern part of the island. Several big bucks in velvet passed through the location including this one-

Sorry for the long delay in posting to my blog. I will make an honest attempt to post more often in the future. Thanks for sticking with me.
I puttered around the waterfront this morning. It's starting to get busy down there. I just wish the weather would get better. Last week was pretty bad. Daily NE gales and drizzle. The upcoming week into the weekend doesn't look any better. We are experiencing a typical Nantucket spring or lack thereof. Windy and cold every day. Last year we were spoiled. From April 1 through Labor Day the weather was spectacular every single day. And it only rained 4 times the whole summer. I guess we are due for a lousy spring an summer. In any event, here are the pictures I took today-

Bucks and Antlers

It's been rather slow down at the waterfront as of late. I planned something different for today's blog entry. It's all about bucks and antlers. Over the past few months I have developed an interest and passion for deer. I find the animals fascinating and I study them on a daily basis. Recently, I built an antler trap and set it up in the wild. It's a shelf attached to a horizontal log. Above the shelf is a piece of wood which forms sort of a roof. Bait is placed in the rear of the trap on the shelf. The idea is to get the bucks to go into the trap after the bait thus knocking off their antlers on the section of wood above. So far I have not had any results. But most of the bucks in the area of my trap are still carrying their antlers. Time will tell if my experiment works. I set up my trail camera above the antler trap to see who is visiting it. I get at least 5 different bucks at the trap on a nightly basis. Also, I have started antler hunting. I have never done this before. I go to a different section of the island to search for antlers. One day recently I found 7 antlers in an hour of searching. Among those 7 antlers were two matched sets! That was a good day. Other days I found as many as 4 antlers and as little as 1 or 2. So far in four afternoons of antler hunting, I have found 18 antlers. Not bad for a rookie. It took me a long time to finally figure out where the antlers could be found. I spent endless hours searching in all the wrong places. Now that I know where to look, I am having very good luck. In any event, here are some pictures from my trail camera overlooking the antler trap. And A picture of all the antlers I found so far including the biggest one I found-

UPDATE: I checked my trail camera this morning after leaving it above the antler trap for a week. Most of the bucks have dropped their antlers. (Not at my trap) This one had dropped his antlers moments before the picture was taken. That open wound has gotta hurt!!! Click on the pictures twice to enlarge.

Snow At The Waterfront

Yes, folks, it's true. I witnessed an extremely rare occurrence down at the waterfront early this morning. Snow. While America is buried under three to four feet of snow, we here on Nantucket have only seen snow once this "winter." It was a welcomed surprise to a photog such as myself to see the waterfront covered in a light dusting of the rare white stuff today.

Buck Of The Week:

I have several feeding stations for deer set up around the island. I leave my trail camera at them to capture any deer who visits them. In this particular location, I had several different bucks but I got a weird looking buck on film. There are a few things to take note of here. At first glance, it looks as though the buck has dropped (or shed) his left antler. Upon closer inspection, look at the second picture in the series, he has not dropped his left antler. He has an antler there. It is coming out of his head in the normal area but it curves back along the top of his head and down his neck. Interesting. Also note the notched left ear and the drop tine on his right antler. And notice his haunches poking out, ribs showing and swollen left knee. Double clik on the pictures to enlarge.

Sunrise/Waiting for the temp to go up

There was a pretty spectacular sunrise over the waterfront this past Friday. I was able to grab a few shots of it before I headed out scalloping for the day. It was a cold morning. I had to wait until 8:15 before I could head to the grounds. We usually start fishing at 6:30am. Town law prohibits us from starting any earlier. And the air temperature must be 28 degrees before anyone is allowed to fish. Salt water freezes at 28 degrees and the thinking is that if we were allowed to fish in temperatures less than 28 degrees, we would run the risk of the seed scallops we haul up in our dredges freezing and dying before they are returned to the water. When me the guys have to wait for the temperature to make it to 28, We usually pick a spot and raft our scallop boats up and talk about how bad scalloping has become. It's the same discussion every year. The Marine Department flies a red flag at the Town Pier. We choose a spot in view of the flag to raft up and have a gam. When the flag is dropped, we all charge out to the scallop grounds at full throttle.

I got this old bruiser on my trail cam early one morning headed back to his bed for the day. 99% of the bucks I capture on my trail cam are nocturnal. They move between the hours of midnight and 5 or 6am. They spend every second of the daylight hours hiding in the thickest brush imaginable avoiding humans. Smart animals. A Rare Calm Waterfront

I was able to get several shots this past weekend of a calm waterfront. Very rare for this time of the year. We usually experience daily ever-living gales during the winters here. We are finally getting some cold weather after about 7 years of mild winters. This morning, it was 5 degrees. The cold will be short lived, though. In a couple days it is forecasted to be in the 40's with rain. We still have not had any snow this winter. Well, we had one snowfall of about 6 inches but that is the only time it has snowed here. The rest of America is getting snowstorm after snowstorm. We completely miss the storms or it changes to a warm rain. Buck Of The Week:

Here, I set up my trail cam at a point where three deer trails intersect. I documented a lot of deer on the cam in this particular spot including this buck. He was very interested in my camera and circled around for a close inspection. I am searching for his antlers now as they started to drop them a couple weeks ago. On a completely unrelated note, I had a rare visitor to my bird feeders last week. A White-Winged Crossbill. Interesting little bird. I have never seen one before.

Buck Of The Week:

I've been following and photographing this big guy for a few months. Again, I set up my trail cam at a creek bed where I had it once before. The buck uses this trail often. I'm hoping to find his antlers as soon as he drops them. I know his travel corridor. Now I need to find his bedding area and his food source. His antlers will most likely be between those two areas when he sheds them. I have a very very very small chance of getting his antlers as there are hundreds of other people combing this area on a daily basis looking for antlers.

Miss China Aground At Brant Point

The wreck, Miss China broke free from her mooring Sunday night during the storm and drifted onto the beach at Brant Point where she will stay until a salvage crew is arranged to tow her off.
Update: There are plans being made to remove the wreck from the beach at Brant Point. She will be towed to the Steamboat Wharf where she will be prepared to be towed to New Bedford and destroyed. A lot of people on Nantucket are happy to finally see the old girl leave the harbor.

1/3/2011 A tug towed the wreck to Steamboat Wharf today. A hazmat company was hired to remove the sewage from her. Not sure when the next tug will come and remove her from Nantucket for good. Stay tuned.

1/9/2011 The wreck is still tied up at Steamboat Wharf. All of the sewage and other hazardous materials have been pumped out of her. Not sure when she will be towed out of here. I want to be at Brant Point when she is being towed around the point bound for America. That will be the last time she ever rounds Brant Point.

Lobster Caught in Dredge/Dock Work

While scalloping way up harbor the other day, I caught a lobster in one of my dredges. I caught lobsters while scalloping around the West Jetty before but never have I caught one up harbor. And years ago I remember catching big starfish in my dredges all along Hulbert Ave and the West Jetty. Sometimes I would catch more starfish than scallops. I wonder what happened to all the starfish. I guess if there are no scallops for the starfish to eat, they will move out of the area.

There has been some activity around the waterfront lately. A new walkway has been installed between the Angler's Club and Commercial Wharf. I'm not sure who is doing the work. Usually it has always been AGM Marine but I don't see them or their familiar barge and crane doing the work this time. The new walkway is a nice addition to the waterfront. I tested it out yesterday.

There's a new addition to the waterfront. A Donelle 43. Jonas owns her. She looks like an ex-lobster boat. She's big and beamy for a 43.

I've been off the water for a while finishing up a job on land. I was able to get out commercial scalloping for a few days last week. The season doesn't look promising in the least. I am able to get my five bushel limit but I have to work at it. The days of getting my limit in one or two tows are long gone. There seems to be a bit of seed scallops showing up lately. If they survive the rust tide next summer it will be a miracle. In any event, here are a few pictures I took lately-

Commercial Scallop Season 2010

Commercial Bay Scallop season has arrived. I was talking to an old local who has been scalloping here for close to 40 years. He told me he has never seen it this bad before. He also told me that he's pretty certain that the industry is over and probably will never rebound. I fear he is correct in his assumption. This is no surprise to anyone. We saw it coming for several years now. Nobody will ever know why our commercial scallop industry has failed. It's time to hang up my dredges and move on. It's been a great run for me.

A Trip To Coskata. August 2010.

I took my boat up to Coskata this summer. It's beautiful country up there. Not a lot of people who live here get to experience it. I was able to bring my boat into Coskata Pond only because it was high tide. I would not be able to do it on a low or even a mid tide. I went exploring while I was there. I have never seen so many fiddler crabs in my life. There were thousands and thousands of them there. The shark you see was well inland from the shoreline. I suspect it ventured in on the high tide, got disoriented and was stranded at low tide. The Coskata Caves pictured are interesting. They are located at the mouth of the pond and are quite large. There have been some awesome moonrises lately. As the sun is setting, the moon is rising. A photographers dream. I ventured out to the shores of West Polpis Harbor last night to catch the moonrise. I was not disappointed. On the way home, I stopped by Brant Point and grabbed a shot there.

Summer ended abruptly here on Nantucket. We are now experiencing a good old-fashioned fall. Windy, cold and cloudy most days. There have been some fine days mixed in for good measure. I venture out every evening to photograph the sunset and the evening skies afterwards. There have been some pretty spectacular sunsets as of late. Most folks leave right after sunset. It's wise to wait an hour or so after the sun has set to start photographing. Here are some scenes I grabbed at various locations around the waterfront the past two weeks-

Commercial Scallop Season Right Around the Corner

Commercial Scallop Season starts November 1. It doesn't look like a good season this year. The rust tide is killing off the scallops. I witnessed huge areas of rust tide in the harbor this summer. Much more than last summer. This may end the scallop industry here on Nantucket as we know it.

Sunset, Cormorants, Local Tuna Fleet Holed Up In West Polpis Harbor & Ratner House About To Litter Our Beaches

First shot is a sailboat becalmed. Second series is of a flock of Cormorants roosting at the entrance to Polpis Harbor and taking flight as I approached them in my boat. Then we have a series of sunset shots I grabbed from Moneymoy and the Two Piers area of the waterfront. Moving along, I went out to West Polpis Harbor and documented the local tuna fleet holed up in preparation for Hurricane Earl which never arrived. And finally, pictures of Gene Ratner's house at Sheep Pond getting ready to fall onto the beach, break up and litter every beach on the island. Hopefully he will demolish the house and take it all to the dump before that disaster happens to our beaches. Or if he cannot remove the house from the beach due to insurance reasons, hopefully he will be there in person picking up every piece of his house off our beaches after it topples over and breaks apart.

The five-story motor vessel Copasetic was in port last week for a short stay. I have never seen her here before. She is an impressive vessel. I went down to the waterfront one evening while she was here and was able to grab a few shots although the lighting was not optimal for picture taking. I went down the next day to get better shots but she was long gone. Next time.

I discovered cactus growing on Coatue about 35 years ago. I often go over to Coatue in my boat and find the cactus. It is rather difficult to locate. This summer, I was able to see the cactus as it was blooming-

Wreck Towed Off Beach

The wreck which was littering the shore at Monomoy for the past nine months was finally towed off the beach last week. A salvage crew turned the wreck around on the beach and waited for high tide to tow it into deep water. I was hoping that the boat would be cut up where it lay on the beach and then brought to the dump. Instead, she was towed and put back on a mooring in the harbor. I am not sure if the taxpayers of Nantucket paid for all of this. Hopefully not and the owner of the wreck paid for the salvage operation himself. It's been a beautiful summer so far. The best time to visit the waterfront is between 4 and 5 in the morning. Nobody is there and the water is very still and calm. A perfect time to grab some shots. Here are a few reflections I took over the past few weeks-

Karsten Reinemo's New Boat

There is a new charter boat in the fleet. Karsten Reinemo recently took delivery of his new 34' Parker. She has twin 300hp Yamaha four stroke outboard motors. Karsten took me along for a ride today. Here are a few shots I grabbed-

Spring At The Waterfront

Spring has arrived at the waterfront. I have never seen a March as nice as this one. March is typically our worst month weather-wise here on Nantucket. We have enjoyed at least five days in a row of beautiful warm weather. Very very unusual. The waterfront is still quiet but there are signs of life. The flowers are blooming and people are starting to stir. The charter boat guys are thinking of splashing their boats soon in anticipation of their upcoming season. I noticed the Nordic Tug, Blue Yonder, was out cruising around today. Her owner, Pete, is taking a trip. He's going on the America's Great Route.

Commercial Scallop Season ends soon. There is chatter around the docks that it may be extended a week or so as there are still a lot of scallops out at the west end to be harvested.

Extreme High Tide

We experienced an extreme high tide last weekend. All the finger piers in the Boat Basin were completely submerged. I grabbed some shots.
